Okanlawon Tijjani,
The Nigeria Minister of Power, Babatunde Fashola and NERC has announced the increase in electricity Tariff citing investor's profit factor as major reason for the increment. Though the tariff has been increased but other charges have been outrightly removed.
In Nigeria, 85% of electricity users are used to uncontrolled usage of electricity consumptions, when you walk on the street of Nigeria residential areas, you will count dozens of homes who refused or forgot to switch off bulbs meant for night illumination, the most painful part is that most of the bulbs are incandescent bulbs.
The National Orientation Agency should embark on an enlightenment/awareness programme on how to curb electricity wastages.
Here, we will learn how to drastically cut down electricity consumption so as to maximize our bill. By conserving energy, you will be amazed how much you have saved by every year end.
1. Unplug your appliances when they're not in use Your TV, computer, microwave and even some washing machines have a 'standby' mode, which means they're still using energy even when they're not in use.
2. Buy appliances with a good energy rating The more stars, the better – but think about size first. Often it's easier for a larger model to be more efficient (and therefore have more stars) than a smaller one. However, since it is bigger, its overall energy consumption is usually higher. Today, so many new appliances have been modified to consume less electricity, if your refrigerator, air condition, TV, and other home appliances are not the low-electricity-consumption devices, its advisable to replace them because you will be paying more bills for a longer time than the cost of purchasing new ones.
3. Regulate your switch On/switch off culture. Its not a must that your appliances be switched on. Your freezers and refrigerators can be switched off before bedtime and also your ceiling/standing fans can be used at bedtime only, except at building that has poor cross ventilation constructions.
4. Switch To LEDs! Now, beyond the big boy, probably the next best step you can take is ditching your incandescent light bulbs for LEDs. They are best options for low-cost, high-efficiency, green lighting. Another positive of LEDs is that they don’t contain any mercury. While cutting electricity use by switching from incandescent light bulbs to CFLs surely reduces mercury pollution from coal power plants, CFLs do contain a tiny amount of mercury, which puts some people off. LEDs, on the other hand, are a completely different technology and don’t require or contain any mercury. For home lightings, buy the smaller but durable LED bulbs, your outside bulbs for security doesn't require the 850w LED bulbs.
5. Fabrics. It might be funny, but when ever I am to buy new clothing for myself I go for fabrics that doesn't require ironing after washing. All I need do is to properly dry clean them. This might be difficult for some folks (most especially women) whose clothing are more of the traditional wears. However, there are are modern pressing irons that consume lesser energy, buy them! In most cases I take my suits and occasional traditional wears to laundry shops since I don't always use them its cost effective to give of out for dry cleaning.
Take this campaign to the grass roots, share this piece on your social media to friends, speak to folks who can't read or those who are not on social media.
It is our duty to encourage investors into Africa and low electricity tariff that has caused low profit making in the electricity sector has for long discouraged investors.
We on the other hand can beat outrageous expenses on electricity consumption by being prudent and cultured with energy consumptions.
