The Presidency has justified the barring of journalists from a meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and members of the Bring Back Our Girls Movement (BBOG).Media were barred from attending the meeting between Buhari and the BBOG leaders at the Presidential Villa on Thursday.
This has been viewed in some sections as an affront to the media considering the kidnapping of the girls by the Boko Haram terrorists in 2014 as a matter of public interest.
However, Buhari’s spokesperson, Malam Garba Sheu, differed.“We asked cameras out for two reasons,” said Shehu.“Sensitive security information may be disclosed and privacy is not unusual with leaders around the world when they meet families in grief. We didn't want anyone to get the sense that the President was exploiting their images in a photo op,” Shehu explained somewhat unconvincingly.
Efforts to rescue more than 200 schoolgirls the Boko Haram sect kidnapped have been unsuccessful.
