Summary of Western Tuesday elections and new delegates stats

Bernie Sanders wins Idaho

Bernie Sanders said in a statement after his wins in the Idaho and Utah Democratic presidential caucuses that "tremendous voter turnouts" gave his campaign two victories "with extremely large margins."

The Vermont senator said the support in Tuesday's races "give me confidence that we will continue to win major victories in the coming contests."

Thank you Idaho for our second big win of the night!

Sen. Sanders pointed to the participation of young people and working-class people, saying it was "exactly what the political revolution is all about."

Hillary Clinton won Arizona's primary against Sanders earlier on Tuesday, and she'll end the night still leading Sanders in the race for the Democratic Party's nomination by more than 300 pledged delegates.

Ted Cruz takes all of Utah's 40 GOP delegates

Ted Cruz has won Utah's Republican presidential caucus, and has taken all of the state's delegates by finishing with more than 50 percent of the vote.

Senator Cruz's win follows endorsements in the last week from Utah governor Gary Herbert and Mitt Romney, the GOP's last presidential nominee who holds clout among the state's predominantly Mormon voters.

Thank you Utah! Help us #CruzToVictory by contributing today — Ted Cruz (@tedcruz) 23 March 2016

Mr Romney and governor Herbert backed the Texas senator in an effort to derail Donald Trump's path to victory.

Trump and Hillary takes Arizona

Mr Trump won the most delegates on Tuesday, picking up all 58 in Arizona's Republican primary. Republicans also caucused Tuesday in American Samoa, where Mr Trump and Sen Cruz each picked up a delegate.

Ohio governor John Kasich was shut out for the night, leaving him with fewer delegates than Florida senator Marco Rubio, who quit the race last week.

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton win Arizona as they look to tighten grip on nomination

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton drew first blood on what was been nicknamed Western Tuesday, convincingly winning primaries in the state of Arizona, as they attempt to close in on their respective nominations.

The battle shifted westward as voters in Utah and Idaho were also making their picks in a narrowing presidential contest dominated by Mr Trump and Mrs Clinton.

However, Bernie Sanders, the socialist senator from Vermont, was forecast to win the Utah Democrat caucus, demonstrating his ability to carry on fighting all the way to the line.

Much bigger win than anticipated in Arizona. Thank you, I will never forget!

The victory in a winner-takes-all state handed Mr Trump all 58 delegates in Arizona. However, he was facing a stiffer challenge in Utah - where he has struggled to win over its Mormon population.

His challenge will be to prevent Mr Cruz winning more than 50 per cent of the vote, the threshold for taking all 40 delegates, in what would be a blow to his hopes of reaching the magic number of 1237 and securing the nomination.
